Common Orthodontic Issues
Every smile is unique, and so are the orthodontic challenges we can solve. Many people are unsure if they need orthodontic treatment. This page showcases some of the most common orthodontic issues we correct at Ellis Orthodontics.
See if any of these look familiar to you.
Common Issues We Correct
Crowding
- What it is: There isn't enough room in the jaw for all the teeth to fit normally. This can lead to teeth that are crooked, rotated, or overlapped.
- Why fix it: Crowded teeth are harder to clean, which can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease.
Spacing
- What it is: Gaps or spaces between the teeth. This can be caused by missing teeth or a mismatch between the size of the teeth and the jaw.
- Why fix it: Spacing can be a cosmetic concern and can also impact the health of the gums.
Open Bite
- What it is: The upper and lower front teeth do not overlap when biting down, leaving a gap. This can be caused by habits like thumb-sucking or by jaw growth issues.
- Why fix it: An open bite can make it difficult to bite into certain foods and can lead to speech problems.
Deep Overbite
- What it is: The upper front teeth excessively overlap the lower front teeth, sometimes causing the lower teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.
- Why fix it: A deep overbite can cause significant wear on the front teeth and damage to the gum tissue.
Underbite
- What it is: The lower front teeth and jaw sit in front of the upper teeth.
- Why fix it: An underbite can make it difficult to chew properly and can cause uneven wear on the teeth.
Overjet (Protruding Front Teeth)
- What it is: The upper front teeth stick out too far forward over the lower teeth.
- Why fix it: Protruding front teeth are more susceptible to injury and can be a significant cosmetic concern.
Missing Teeth
- What it is: Sometimes, permanent teeth never develop
- Why fix it: Orthodontic treatment can create the proper space for a dental implant or bridge to be placed, restoring both function and appearance.
